White Gravy
Ingredients For White Gravy
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
How To Make White Gravy
STEP 1: MELT THE BUTTER
- In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Once the butter has melted, stir occasionally to avoid burning.
STEP 2: CREATE THE ROUX
- Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the melted butter, stirring continuously to form a smooth paste. This is called a roux.
- Let the roux cook for 1-2 minutes, just until it starts to turn a light golden color. Be careful not to let it brown.
STEP 3: ADD THE MILK AND SEASONINGS
- Slowly pour in 2 cups of whole milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
- Once the milk is fully incorporated, add 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and optional garlic and onion powder. Stir to combine.
- Continue to cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency (about 3-5 minutes). If it’s too thick, add a little more milk to adjust the texture.
STEP 4: SERVE
- Once the gravy has thickened, taste and adjust the seasonings as needed, adding more salt or pepper if desired.
- Serve your white gravy hot over biscuits, mashed potatoes, or any dish of your choice. Enjoy!
