Ingredients For White Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

How To Make White Gravy

STEP 1: MELT THE BUTTER

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  2. Once the butter has melted, stir occasionally to avoid burning.

STEP 2: CREATE THE ROUX

  1. Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the melted butter, stirring continuously to form a smooth paste. This is called a roux.
  2. Let the roux cook for 1-2 minutes, just until it starts to turn a light golden color. Be careful not to let it brown.

STEP 3: ADD THE MILK AND SEASONINGS

  1. Slowly pour in 2 cups of whole milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  2. Once the milk is fully incorporated, add 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and optional garlic and onion powder. Stir to combine.
  3. Continue to cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency (about 3-5 minutes). If it’s too thick, add a little more milk to adjust the texture.

STEP 4: SERVE

  1. Once the gravy has thickened, taste and adjust the seasonings as needed, adding more salt or pepper if desired.
  2. Serve your white gravy hot over biscuits, mashed potatoes, or any dish of your choice. Enjoy!
